Sheet Metal Bending Calculator — Cost per Bend & Part
Who this is for: For designers budgeting bent brackets and enclosures — and for shops explaining why a 3-bend part has a $25 minimum.
Bend count and press rate in — get the forming cost per part, with setup amortized across the batch.
Quick answer: Bending cost = bends × per-bend rate + (setup minutes × press rate ÷ batch). Example: 4 bends at $0.75 + $20 setup at $60/h across 25 parts = $3.00 + $0.80 = $3.80 forming per part. Small batches carry the setup — batch up or pay it.
| Per bend | $0.50–2 (simple 90°) |
|---|---|
| Setup | 15–30 min × press rate ÷ batch |
| Example | 4 bends + $20/25 parts = $3.80/part |
| Minimum | $25–75 typical job minimum |
| Design lever | Fewer bends = linear savings |
| Status | Quotes use standard shop math: machine-hour rate × cycle time + materials + setup amortization. SFM/chipload figures are conservative HSS starting points (carbide runs 3–4× SFM). Compiled September 2026 — estimates for budgeting; real quotes come from the shop that runs the job. |
How is bending priced?
Press brakes charge per bend: $0.50–2 each for simple 90° forms on a press brake, more forcoined, hemmed or large-part bends that need special tooling or a second operator. Setup — tool selection, back-gauge programming, test pieces — is charged like every setup: minutes × rate ÷ batch. Example: a bracket with 4 bends at $0.75 with 20 minutes of setup at $60/h across 25 parts: $3.00 bending + $0.80 setup = $3.80 forming per part — plus the flat sheet (see the sheet metal cost calculator) and any cutting.
